Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of United Way. From helping us to keep fundraising costs down - that way almost all of every contribution gets to the people who need it most - to providing the critical link that pulls business, government and human service agencies together - we can do so much more working together than we can alone - volunteers are involved in heroic efforts to improve our community.

Just a few of the ways volunteers help include:

  • giving their time to determine the needs of the community
  • allocating funds to agencies and programs with proven impact
  • serving on United Way's board
  • planning and staffing events and activities
  • working with United Way-supported agencies and programs

When you volunteer, you're touching people's lives directly. When volunteers are asked why they do it, they usually respond that yes, they enjoy doing something for others, but the most compelling reason is that it makes them feel great!

Meet just one of the thousands of volunteers working to improve lives in our community.

2007 Volunteer of the Year

  Joe Lewis

Joe E. Lewis

Joe Lewis, an Aiken County resident, has proven his dedication to the well being of his community.  As an active volunteer for the United Way of Aiken County for many years, Mr. Lewis has had many roles in the volunteer structure of the United Way.  Most recently, he served as Board Chair for the organization in 2007.

During his term as Board Chair, Mr. Lewis led the organization to many successes including an increase in funding as well as  volunteer involvement.  In his outgoing chair message in the Annual Report, Mr. Lewis stated " I am proud to report that we raised $2,687,654, 109% of our campaign goal and a 4.68% increase over 2006 contributions.  This is quite an accomplishment when you consider the challenges of a difficult economy and a changing workforce."

Thanks to the leadership and dedication of Mr. Lewis, 2007 was a successful year in all aspects.  During the March 13th Annual Meeting, Mr. Lewis passed his gavel to Claudia Adams, the incoming Board Chair.  Even though his term as Board Chair has ended, Mr. Lewis remains active in the organization.
